Meet speaker: Peter Baker

Peter took over as the head of the UK Health & Safety Executives (HSE) Chemical Industries Division (CID) in 2008. He leads 250 staff based across Great Britain and drawn from a wide range of disciplines (inspectors, technical specialists and administrative staff). CID regulates the chemical and downstream oil industries in Great Britain delivering the Seveso II Competent Authority function, and provides safety advice to local planning authorities on developments around major hazard installations. Peter also leads HSEs Chemical Sector Strategy, and has UK policy responsibility for the Seveso II Directive, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and land use planning matters. He is chair of the UKs multi-stakeholder Chemicals and Downstream Oil Industries Forum.

Peter graduated BSc in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield and joined HSE in 1985 as a Factory Inspector. In 1994 Peter moved to the North West of England and has since held a number of senior, managerial and operational delivery and policy posts in HSEs Field Operations and Hazardous Installations Directorates, including Director of HSEs Corporate Specialist Division, Acting Director of the Hazardous Installations Directorate, and as a member of HSEs Senior Management Team.
